Take the time and opportunity to participate in an artistic collage that celebrates the Spirit Festival of Creston 2011. The public is encouraged to stop in at Kingfisher Books and help create these works of art to be displayed at the closing ceremonies on February 27th. “Rules no Rules“ is just that, there are established categories to help fan your creativity and then there are no rules, just let the Spirit Guide you. Downstairs at Kingfisher books is where the create station is located along with supplies and a variety of materials to help you in your contribution. This month long event is sponsored by the Art Action Coalition with the intention of engaging the community in the Action of Art. Stop by often and bring your friends to take part in this expression of Community, Celebration and Creative Spirit of Art in Action. The Themes are:
‘Winter Blues and My Favorite Shoes” - self explanatory

Go back to Kingfisher and see it on one of the collages.
“Artist Trading Cards” - social media traditionalist style - ultimate in art action for the individual and for the masses. Create your own smaller than postcard size piece of art that can be traded after the display period...or before?! mix and Match at the Gallery downtown from 18th - 26th.

Spirit Festival 2011

Feb 05, 2011 - Feb 28, 2011
Spirit Festival 2011 will be an event designed to showcase and stimulate the best of our area in visual arts, music, performance, literary arts and film. It will be inclusive of young and old, students and teachers, amateurs and professionals, native and non-native members of the community.
The festival will incorporate contemporary and historical aspects to encourage a vision of community enduring over time. Students and emerging artists will be able to improve their skills sets and see themselves as potential professionals. Elders and established artists are encourage to share their visions. By involving people from the Kootenays outside our own valley we will show that excellence can be achieved through cooperation between individuals and small communities distant from the urban centres of the province. Residents will be encouraged to see themselves as part of a larger community of recognized excellence. All of this will enhance community and provincial pride and identity which will further the spirit crated by the 2010 Olympics. We always have to consider our geographic challenges and as such plan events with the cooperation of representatives throughout the area.
The Spirit Festival will be comprised of diverse events which will be tied together by their connection with the Creston Valley. Although the inclusion of both amateur and professional artists and contemporary and historical contexts runs the risk of emphasizing contrast within the community, this will be overcome by the respectful sharing of ideas and wisdom and the focus on the local area. Because we are a small and isolated community this type of cooperation is essential to a vibrant arts scene. Past experience has demonstrated that such a mix will be successful. Residents of the area tend to be strongly loyal to the valley and respectful of fellow residents.

Spirit Festival - Art/History

Feb 05, 2011 - Feb 25, 2011
Staff and volunteers at the Creston Museum have been pulling some very special objects out of storage. These will be on display at the Creston Public Library, 531 - 16th Ave. S from Feb 5th thru Feb 25th during library hours.

Scattered throughout the Museum\\\'s collections of artifacts, photographs, and documents are works of art that show the Creston Valley through the eyes of its residents. These works of art are very unique portrayals of the Valley\\\'s history and they are about to go on display for a very short time.

Art/History is a special exhibit of twenty-five works of art. They range from watercolours and oil paintings to pencil sketches, and have been done on everything from canvas to barnwood to a saw. Despite these differences, they all have one thing in common: they all depict a person or place in the Creston Valley, at some time in the past.

Some of the works were created by well-known local artists. For example, the show includes three paintings by Margaret Moore, and a series by Chris Herchmer. Many of the artists are less famous, though, and most of them were known for other things, as orchardists, office workers, and even army scouts, but not as artists.

The most recent work of art was created less than ten years ago, and the earliest was done in 1845, though the Museum is only fortunate enough to have a reproduction of that one.

A few of the paintings have been on display, at various times, in the Museum\\\'s permanent exhibits. Some have never been shown at all. And this is the first time ever that all twenty-five works will be exhibited together.

Each work of art is accompanied by a panel outlining its history or that of the artist, along with historic photos and other documents. In addition, the show will feature a special section called The Art of Agriculture, in which Fall Fair trophies, fruit labels, and other objects highlight the role of agriculture in the Valley\\\'s history.

Art/History will be presented at the Creston Public Library February 5-25, 2011. Admission is free, and the exhibit is open throughout the Library\\\'s operating hours.
