Malcolm Ferguson for council

Written by Malcolm Ferguson

We live in a wonderful small town, a true community, a place where people support each other, and care for each other. As a member of the Creston Town Council, I pledge to you that I will do my best to build on the strengths of our community and to enhance the options that are here, so people can have improved economic, cultural, and educational opportunities.

Although I was raised in Vancouver my roots in Creston are deep. My family originally arrived in Creston in 1922 and purchased a dairy farm in West Creston. My grandfather was the Superintendent of Public Works in the 1940’s, and my father retired here. I now live in the house my father purchased in 1994. I previously spent thirty years working for a major American corporation. I also have a degree in engineering. My background means I am comfortable dealing with people in all walks of life. I have excellent public relations and business skills and very strong management abilities.

Since retiring in Creston, I have contributed to our fine community in many ways. I have worked with the Cancer Relay for Life for three years, and last year was chair of the Cancer Relay for Life committee. I am presently Vice-President of the Footlighters Theatre Society and secretary of the Creston Arts Council. I also contribute to fund raising for the Creston Refugee Committee this year by once a month, making brunch in a local church for up to one hundred and twenty people.

When I look around our community, I see much that has been accomplished and much more that could be done. Throughout its history, one of the great strengths of Creston has been the rich abundance of our agricultural lands. Previous generations have made Creston one of the most productive and amazing agriculture areas in British Columbia. We must continue to promote and publicize our area as the go-to area for abundant, locally grown, healthy food – from fruits and vegetables to grain, meat, cheese, wine, and other value added foods. We can take advantage of the food movement to promote Creston as a go-to food destination area; come and drink wine, dine in our fine restaurants, go bird watching in one of the finest birding areas in North America, or fishing, hiking, golfing, or many other recreational pursuits. One of the finest Recreation Centres in the whole of South-Eastern BC has recently been upgraded. People outside our community may not have a sufficient appreciation of what our community has to offer. We need to polish and update our image.

We also need to support and assist our business community. Activities like the Farmers Market, the Santa Claus parade; the Blossom Festival, Fall Fair and the Christmas Craft Fair bring people to Creston and to the downtown area supporting local businesses. We can do much more to increase tourism in the Creston Valley.

Creston has a versatile arts community which has grown amazingly over the past few years. We now have professional successful artists from all disciplines living here; photographers, writers, painters, jewelers, musicians, actors…all contributing to the life of our community. Many people don’t realize how much the arts contribute to business but research has shown that time and again, the arts are a big economic driver for local economies.

By supporting the arts community, agricultural and local business to work together on various initiatives, we can build on and enhance our existing strengths.

I urge you to vote for the big-picture ideas that I bring to our community and help me make our community a dynamic, supportive and successful place to live.

Finding Refuge In Creston (Response) | iPod Entry

Written by Loretta Fauth

The "I Love Creston … Finding Refuge In Creston” story about the Abo-Nafol family was an inspiring and touching read. I can’t imagine how it must have felt to live in fear everyday, not only for yourself but for your family. To have your way of life taken away and yet to persevere and overcome all you have been through is truly amazing. The picture on the front cover speaks louder than words. Your... smiles made me smile. And the picture with Eman holding her son Bilal’s face (such a precious face) made me tear up.

I was a resident of Creston for many years and have lots of friends and family members there that I visit often. I love the Creston Valley and the people who live there. To the Abo-Nafol family ... You have all been on an incredible journey, but now you are home. Welcome to Canada and better yet ... welcome to the Creston Valley.
Makes me proud to be a Canadian.

CBT co-hosts information sessions in Creston

Written by Submitted

(CASTLEGAR) Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is hosting an information session about the Columbia River Treaty (CRT) in Creston on Monday, November 28. This session is hosted in partnership with local governments and the CRT Local Governments’ Committee.

“The information session will help people who live in the Canadian portion of the Columbia Basin better understand what the CRT is, how it works and what considerations exist for the future,” said Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO.

Monday, November 28
Creston & District Community Complex
312 9th Avenue North
Open House 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Free Dinner 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Presentation 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

The CRT is an international agreement between Canada and the United States to coordinate flood control and optimize hydroelectric power generation on both sides of the border. Under the 1964 treaty, three dams were constructed in Canada, including Mica, Duncan and Hugh Keenleyside. A fourth dam, Libby, was constructed in Montana. Its reservoir, the Koocanusa, extends 67 kilometres into Canada.

The CRT has no official expiry date, but has a minimum length of 60 years, which is met in September 2024. Either Canada or the United States can terminate many of the provisions of the agreement effective any time after September 2024, provided written notice is filed at least 10 years in advance (2014). While no decision has been made by either Canada or the United States on the future of the current treaty, given the importance of the issues, and the approaching date of 2014, both countries are now conducting studies and exploring future options for the CRT.

“Our primary role with respect to the CRT is to act as an information resource for Basin residents,” says Muth, adding that CBT does not make decisions with respect to the CRT. “Consultation on the CRT is a Provincial responsibility.”

Working with the Regional District of Central Kootenay and the Town of Creston, CBT is bringing experts on the CRT and international water management from across Canada to Creston.

“Having people with this much knowledge about the current treaty come to our community is an excellent opportunity for all of us to learn more,” says Town of Creston Mayor, Ron Toyota.

“This is a chance to talk with experts and our neighbours about something that has influenced the geography and social fabric of this region for decades,” says Regional District Director, John Kettle.

CBT is hosting similar sessions in other communities as well as online information sessions via the internet. CBT has also prepared documents, videos and other resources to help residents learn more.

Learn more about the CRT at www.cbt.org/crt. CBT delivers economic, social and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. To learn more about CBT programs and initiatives, visit www.cbt.org or call 1.800.505.8998.
