All of us, somewhere in our family tree must have some connection to Remembrance Day, whether it is a distant relative’s memories of their experiences during the war, or memories of their own.
One of my personal connections comes from an old photograph of my dad. He was in the Royal British Navy, but I never did hear any of the details of his experience there, and sadly, now, it is too late to ask him.
He was a young man of 15 or 16 years of age, a British boy from England when he joined the Royal Navy. Probably it was his first adventure away from home and all that was familiar.
Our family moved to the Creston Valley in 1973. My dad would have been 45 years old. He was an interior decorator, painter and wallpaper hanger by trade, and likely decorated some of your homes. Under the fresh wallpaper he would always take a pen and sign his name, F.H.Shurmer, (a trademark of his own right.)
With this Remembrance Day I am reminded of my dad as I observe the old black and white photograph before me. I smile to myself as I study the photo looking for resemblances in his face to any of his children or grandchildren.
I am thankful my dad isn’t buried amidst the white crosses of war in some distant field where the poppies grow. But to those who are; those who valiantly fought for our freedom, isn’t it right that we wear a poppy and remember them….yes, remember them...."Lest we forget.”

Learn something new every day. I didn't know your dad was in the navy! Love the picture of him.
