Tanya Ducharme for council

Featured in In the Daily Buzz - Nov 14, 2011
Tanya Ducharme

Hello Creston! For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Tanya Ducharme. I am one of your incumbent councillors running in this year’s election. The questions have been asked….Who am I? What have I done? What do I plan to do in the next 3 years if elected?

Who am I? That is easy…First and foremost I am a Mom to my most amazing 8 year old, my son Jeramie. Who I might add when I asked him if I should run for town council again stated; “Of course you should Mom, I am proud of you for doing good things where we live”. It is easy to do “good things” where you live when you have a vested interest. All of my immediate family lives in Creston and the Creston Valley and I have built relationships with many friends that I consider family. As I reflect on my life and living in the Creston Valley for over 29 years I am so very thankful that my parents moved to Creston in 1982 and made this our home. I have had many opportunities to leave Creston and expand on my career but to be truthful…I just can’t leave my home and the most beautiful place on earth. I have travelled many places and I can honestly say there is no place like Creston and it is my HOME!

As for my background and what else do I do….I have been employed at Columbia Brewery for over 15 years and have spent the last 4 years working as the Environmental Health & Safety Compliance Manger. Some of my role includes dealing with Federal and Provincial Regulations and Legislations. Working with the Ministry to ensure that we are a environmentally responsible company. Plus the most important part of my job is ensuring the health &safety; of our 150 employees. I take it to heart everyday and I want to do my best to ensure that every one of our employees heads home to their families healthy and safe so that they to can enjoy there family and the beautiful surroundings of Creston.

As well I am very involved in our community as I volunteer on many societies and non profit organizations. I feel that it is very important to give back to your community and if you are not involved you do not have a say or can you judge the work of others.

What have I done? Well, lets start by saying 3 years has flew by. This council has accomplished some great things but there is still so much to do.
Some of the highlights for me as I look back over the 3 years, the list is long. The largest which I think is coming to shape before everyone’s eyes is removing the property at the junction of HWY 3 and HWY 3A from the ALR and approving the construction of the new hotel. I truly believe that with this large scale hotel it will give Creston the opportunity to be host to many events and conferences that will benefit all businesses in our valley.

Feral Cats was a very hot topic in the last election and it is safe to say we have not solved the problem completely, but we have a program in place that is now working and issues are being dealt with. Council has also demonstrated that we do not just look at one problem we look at what could also become an issue. We review by laws that addressed all animals and produced rules that apply to everyone and gave our enforcement clear direction.

Another accomplishment, we have built strong and positive relationship with other governing bodies in our valley like the Lower Kootenay Band Council and the Regional District Directors. Together we can make decisions that affect all citizens of the Creston Valley. To be able to sit down and talk about the issues that are effecting all areas of the valley and come to conclusion that are a step forward is always a positive direction to go.

The hiring of a new town manager, with an open for business concept, a warm and friendly personality, and the determination to make a difference for the better in Creston was a huge asset to our Town. Leadership is key to any success. When I look at what our Staff at the Town of Creston has to offer we a very lucky. If it is fixing a broken water line, building new sidewalks or when you are assisted in the town office we should be very proud. All of our staff truly cares to make your experience a “good one” and they take pride in what they do for our community.

A HUGE personal success for me was the Olympic Torch Celebration that we had in our community on January 23rd 2010. I had the opportunity to work with a great committee to showcase Creston. I can honestly say when I stood on stage in front of the all you that came out to support that celebration I was over whelmed. I remember the excitement and the emotions like it was yesterday. To see our community come together and the sprit and excitement made me so proud to have been elected and to work for you the citizens of Creston and the Creston Valley.

What do I plan to do in the next 3 years if elected?

Where do I start? First by saying that I will continue to listen to your concerns, be involved in our community, and work hard to make the right decisions to move into the future.

A key issue for me is to remain focused on the removal of heavy truck traffic from Canyon Street to make our “Main Street” more appealing for businesses as well as safer for our citizens and our visitors.

Continue infrastructure improvements like our Waste Water Treatment Plant upgrades. The building of more sidewalks. Improvements to our roads. Setting Creston up for sustainability.

Environmentally friendly awareness and education. Reduction of waste to our landfill. Introduce a recycling curbside pick up. Support our water conservation programs. This over time will reduce costs which reflect on taxes.

Creston I was proud to work for you over the last three year and I am willing, when you elect me again this year to work even harder. Creston is the most beautiful place on earth. I am proud to call it my home and I want to make a difference in our community.

if that's a personal note why do you post it pubic-ally?you seem to have a personal bias which is to the detriment of small business! just what this town needs? you and Tanya are perfect bedfellows

Next time keep your criticisms to your self.Don't post them "pubic-ally" as you put it. Stick up for yourself as much as you want, but whoever reads this, is probably not going to hire you, based on your first comment.

I worked in the debt collection industry for 12 years. Please, please do not use this as an aid to do your business.

@patmartin I Agree, this wasn't designed for the petty crap your using it for Paul. Please keep your comments related to the story at hand.

To those above who have supported me THANK YOU. As always there are two sides to every story and I agree that this is not the place to vent or deal with these issues. I do encourge any question that anyone may have that reflects the up and coming election. I would also like to thank "I Love Creston" for featuring all the candidates. This has been a great race!
